Key Summary
  • Bonaire has a hot semi-arid climate (Köppen BSh), with low rainfall and persistently bright skies thanks to its flat coral geography.
  • Sint Eustatius and Saba feature tropical climates, with Saba’s steep volcanic peak creating a lush, rain‑soaked rainforest and a cooler cloud forest zone.

Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba share a Caribbean setting, but their climate identities diverge sharply, driven almost entirely by local topography. Bonaire, a low‑lying coral limestone platform, fits neatly into the hot semi‑arid category (Köppen BSh). Sunshine dominates, and the island scrapes together less than 500 mm (20 in) of rain annually, most of it arriving in brief, late‑year pulses. Sint Eustatius (Statia) rises into gentle volcanic hills that coax a little more moisture from the trade winds, pushing its climate into tropical savanna or monsoon territory (Köppen Aw / Am). Saba, just a short flight away, is the climatic opposite of Bonaire. Its dormant volcano, Mount Scenery, soars to 877 m (2,877 ft) and acts as a formidable rain trap. The lower slopes are draped in tropical rainforest (Köppen Af), while the summit often finds itself wrapped in persistent cloud and qualifies as a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cfb), with markedly cooler nights.

Seasonal swings are modest, but the interplay between relief and the easterly trades creates distinct local experiences. On Bonaire, the dry season from roughly February to June delivers the sunniest, breeziest conditions, with daytime highs around 31°C (88°F) and refreshing east winds. The so‑called wet season, October to December, rarely disrupts plans; it tends to produce a few heavy afternoon showers that vanish quickly, leaving the island’s salt pans shimmering and its diving sites with glorious underwater clarity. Statia and Saba both see their highest rainfall from August to November, when the Intertropical Convergence Zone drifts north. On Saba, orographic lift wrings prodigious moisture from the air, feeding a cloud belt that can linger around 500 to 700 m. This keeps Saba’s famous hiking trail into the elfin forest on Mount Scenery deliciously damp and moss‑draped for much of the year, though the same humidity can feel thick on the coast. Statia receives a more intermediate dose; its afternoon downpours are typically short‑lived, and the modest elevation does enough to keep the air moving without the intense saturation of Saba. For Bonaire, the dazzlingly clear skies make it a year‑round hub for spotting flamingos in the Pekelmeer Sanctuary or drifting over shallows in the Bonaire National Marine Park.

Travel planning across these islands rewards an understanding of rainfall rhythms rather than temperature shifts. The driest, most favourable window for Saba and Statia tends to be March to April, when the trails are least muddy and the trade winds are steady, making ferry crossings and flights to the tiny airstrips smoother. Bonaire’s optimal stretch mirrors this, though its arid character means even wet‑season visits rarely see a day lost to rain. Daytime heat remains stubbornly high everywhere, but the never‑absent trade winds make it manageable. Packing should start with lightweight, breathable fabrics, strong sun protection, and a wide‑brimmed hat. On Saba, a good raincoat and sturdy shoes are needed for forest walks; on Bonaire, reef‑safe sunscreen is a must for snorkelling. The three islands offer a compact showcase of tropical and semi‑arid climates, from the cactus‑studded lowlands of Bonaire to the perpetually green upper slopes of Saba. At WeatherBox, we make sense of these microclimates with detailed Köppen maps and charts, so you can plan your visit with confidence and see exactly why the weather shifts so dramatically in a span of just a few dozen kilometres.
