Key Summary
  • Equatorial Guinea’s lowlands and coastal regions sit under a classic tropical rainforest (Af) climate, with consistently warm temperatures, high humidity, and heavy rainfall throughout the year.
  • The volcanic island of Bioko rises sharply from the sea, creating a distinct subtropical highland climate (Cfb) on its upper slopes where misty, cooler conditions prevail.
  • While no true dry season exists, a slight dip in rainfall between December and February offers a marginally more comfortable window for visiting.

Equatorial Guinea lies astride the equator on the west coast of Central Africa, giving it an overwhelmingly humid, steamy character. Our Köppen-based climate map reveals two dominant zones. Most of the territory (continental Río Muni, the island of Annobón, and coastal Bioko) has a tropical rainforest (Af) climate. Temperatures typically range from 23°C to 31°C (73°F to 88°F) all year, with stubbornly high humidity rarely dipping below 80%. Moist air from the Gulf of Guinea feeds near-daily rainfall, nurturing a thick blanket of lowland jungle. On Bioko, however, the volcanic peak Pico Basilé forces humid air to ascend, creating a subtropical highland climate (Cfb) above roughly 1,500 metres. In this elevated realm, temperatures often hover around 14°C to 20°C (57°F to 68°F), with persistent cloud, mist, and light drizzle replacing the tropic’s heavy downpours.

While the entire country shares a year-round wet regime, subtle seasonal shifts shape the experience of different regions. Across the mainland and Bioko’s coasts, rainfall peaks in two periods, roughly March to May and September to November, when the intertropical convergence zone delivers intense, prolonged storms. The brief interlude from December to February brings only a modest reduction in rain, but skies can stay overcast for hours and the ground rarely fully dries. The drizzle-soaked highland forests of Pico Basilé stand in contrast, cloaked in a near-permanent veil of mist that nourishes a lush mosaic of ferns, orchids, and endemic wildlife. In the coastal city of Bata and the island capital Malabo, you’ll encounter the same sticky tropical rainfall pattern, though Malabo’s northern exposure brings slightly less precipitation than the deluge-prone southern coast of Bioko. Far to the south, remote Annobón mirrors the mainland’s Af pattern, its isolated beaches backed by lush greenery and Atlantic waves.

December to February is the most favourable travel window, though you will still share your days with tropical showers. From March onwards, the twin rainy peaks intensify, turning unpaved roads to rainforest parks like Monte Alén into quagmires. The high humidity and relentless damp can feel oppressive, and cloud cover often obscures the sun for days on end. Packing light, breathable fabrics, sun protection for rare clear spells, a sturdy raincoat, and waterproof footwear will make all the difference. If your plans include Bioko’s cooler highlands, a warm layer for chilly evenings is essential. Insect repellent is vital. At WeatherBox, we know not everyone craves a sun-drenched escape; Equatorial Guinea rewards travellers who embrace the wet with raw, intensely green landscapes and world-class biodiversity.
