Key Summary
  • Madagascar’s eastern coast and highlands intercept moisture-laden trade winds, creating a band of tropical rainforest (Af) and monsoon (Am) climates with heavy, year-round rainfall.
  • A vast rain shadow gives the west and south distinctly seasonal tropical savanna (Aw) and hot semi-arid (BSh) climates, where a multi-month dry season shapes the landscape.
  • The central plateau’s altitude produces subtropical highland climates (Cwb/Cfb), with cooler temperatures and a pronounced dry winter that sets it apart from the steamy lowlands.

Madagascar’s climate mosaic is a direct product of its geography. Straddling the Tropic of Capricorn and surrounded by the warm Indian Ocean, the island is split by a mountainous spine that rises sharply from the east coast. Southeast trade winds slam into this escarpment, dumping copious rainfall on the windward slopes and sustaining the tropical rainforest (Köppen Af) that cloaks the Masoala Peninsula and the eastern corridor as far north as Antongil Bay. Here, humidity stays stubbornly high, and rain can fall in every month. Just offshore, monsoon-influenced areas like Nosy Be record a short drier spell but still fall under the tropical monsoon (Am) classification. In the lee of the highlands, descending air suppresses rain, so the west transitions into tropical savanna (Aw) with a defined wet season from roughly November to April. Farther south and southwest, below the Toliara region, the semi-arid hot steppe (BSh) takes hold, where spiny forests bake under dazzling clear skies for most of the year. At the island’s centre, cities on the elevated plateau such as Antananarivo sit around 1,300 metres, pushing them into a subtropical highland climate (Cwb) where daytime highs in the dry season typically hover between 20°C and 24°C (68°F–75°F) and nights can dip to a crisp 10°C (50°F), a world apart from the coast.

These contrasts shape both scenery and practical comfort. The east’s high humidity and frequent downpours keep jungle trails slick and waterways brimming, but the persistent damp can feel wearing. Along the west coast, the dry season from May to October sees the landscape turn into a golden, deciduous parkland, offering favourable conditions for lemur-watching among the baobabs of Morondava or casting a line for the broad tidal flats. October and November bring a hot, sticky build-up before the monsoon rains arrive. The far south’s semi-arid climate means stubbornly high heat and vast stretches of thorny bush, with temperatures in summer often climbing above 35°C (95°F). For many, the most pleasant window across much of the country is the southern winter, when the highlands enjoy bright, mild days and coastal areas escape the worst of the rain and cyclone risk that peaks from January to March. Our WeatherBox climate charts illustrate these patterns clearly, helping you see at a glance how rainfall and temperature vary by month.

If you are planning a trip, the dry season months of May through October are widely considered the optimal period for visiting most regions. This is when the gloriously clear skies over Diego Suarez and the far north allow you to explore the otherworldly limestone tsingy formations without flooding, and when the cooler highlands invite long walks through terraced rice fields without oppressive heat. The wetter months from November to April can bring challenging conditions: heavy tropical rain, the potential for cyclones and stifling humidity. Packing should reflect the split. Lightweight, breathable fabrics work year-round at low altitude, but a raincoat and waterproof shoes become important for the east, while a light fleece or jumper is needed for evenings in the highlands. Sun protection is essential everywhere. Madagascar’s climate is a story of extremes written by monsoons, mountains, and ocean currents, a place where you can move from dripping jungle to sun-scorched savanna in a single day’s drive.
