Key Summary
  • Equatorial islands with a warm, humid maritime climate year-round, tempered by steady ocean breezes.
  • Strong seasonal rainfall rhythm: a main dry season (gravana) from June to September, a brief January lull, and extended rains from October to May.
  • Rugged volcanic relief creates sharp microclimates, from rain-drenched southern highlands to noticeably sunnier northern shores.

São Tomé and Príncipe sit almost squarely on the equator in the Gulf of Guinea, giving the entire country a deeply tropical, oceanic climate. The Köppen classification map on WeatherBox reveals a patchwork shaped by altitude and exposure. Much of the interior and the windward southern slopes wear the tropical rainforest climate (Af) label, where rainfall is abundant in every month and humidity rarely eases. Along the northern and northeastern coasts, including the capital São Tomé city, conditions shift towards a tropical savanna climate (Aw) with a more pronounced dry season. High on the flanks of Pico de São Tomé, above roughly 1,500 metres, temperatures drop enough to enter a subtropical highland climate (Cwb), offering a cool escape from the coastal heat. Our graphs chart daily highs at sea level typically ranging from 27°C to 31°C (81°F to 88°F), while overnight lows settle around 22°C to 24°C (72°F to 75°F). Relative humidity remains stubbornly high, often above 80%, but the ever-present Atlantic breeze keeps the air moving.

Geography dictates where you will find sunshine or soaking rainfall. The prevailing southwesterly winds pile moisture against the islands’ volcanic spine, wringing out immense volumes of rain over the southern and western highlands. Obo National Park’s jungle-cloaked slopes rank among Africa’s wettest places, receiving drenching rains even during the so-called dry months. This feeds the country’s famously lush landscapes, the waterfall-laced interior and the drizzle-soaked cocoa and coffee plantations that thrive on rich volcanic soil. In contrast, the north coast lies in a rain shadow, and here you will encounter a reliable dry season known locally as the gravana. From June to September, the beaches near São Tomé city and the sun-splashed shores around Lagoa Azul enjoy a marked drop in rainfall and a welcome increase in clear-sky hours. A shorter, less predictable dry spell, the gravanito, often arrives in January, briefly interrupting the long rainy season that stretches from October to May. Even during the gravana, the air stays heavy and a passing shower remains possible, but extended periods of tropical rainfall become far less frequent.

If you are weighing the best time to experience the islands’ sandy coves, plantation tours, and forest birdwatching, the gravana dry season from June to September generally offers the most favourable conditions. Coastal tracks and jungle pathways are drier underfoot, and the reduced cloud cover lifts the mood along the palm-fringed coastline. The gravanito in January provides a secondary, narrower window that can work well, though sudden downpours are still part of the deal. The extensive rainy months bring a different reward: the islands become spectacularly verdant, waterfall volumes peak, and the forests echo with amphibian calls. That said, remote roads can become impassable and outdoor plans need constant flexibility. When packing, think lightweight, breathable fabrics, strong sun protection, and sturdy waterproof footwear. A raincoat or compact umbrella belongs in your bag no matter the season, and a light fleece proves its worth if you head into the cooler highlands.
