Key Summary
  • Tunisia’s climate transitions sharply from a Mediterranean north (Köppen Csa) through a semi-arid centre (BSh) to a hot desert south (BWh), shaped by the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara’s reach.
  • Coastal mountains in the northwest trap winter rains, while the flat interior and south endure long, intensely dry summers with stubbornly high temperatures.
  • The most favourable travel windows are spring and autumn, when warmth is comfortable across the country and the extremes of summer heat or winter chill can be avoided.

Tunisia’s climate portrait is a study in geographic contrast. The country sits on North Africa’s Mediterranean rim, where a narrow, fertile coastal strip gives way to the vast Sahara. We base our analysis on the Köppen climate classification, and Tunisia displays three main zones. The northern coast and the Tell Atlas foothills fall under hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa), with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Moving southward, the central plains and the Sahel region transition to a hot semi-arid climate (BSh), where rainfall becomes erratic and summer heat builds. The southern interior, part of the great Sahara, is a hot desert climate (BWh) with negligible rainfall and extreme temperature swings. This geographic staircase, from the sea to the desert, dictates almost everything about the weather. The prevailing northwesterly winds carry moisture to the northern highlands, while the south sits under descending, drying air masses that reinforce the aridity.

Regional differences are stark and tie directly to landscapes of interest. In the Csa north, including Tunis, Carthage, and the whitewashed alleys of Sidi Bou Said, winters bring a succession of rain-bearing fronts from the Mediterranean. Temperatures in winter typically range from 8°C to 16°C (46°F to 61°F), while summer days average 26°C to 34°C (79°F to 93°F) under dazzling blue skies. The Cap Bon peninsula and the Mogod Mountains catch the most rain, making this the country’s most verdant corner. Along the central coast, where resort towns like Sousse and Monastir enjoy a slightly drier BSh regime, summer heat is more persistent and winter rainfall less reliable. Inland, the steppe around Kairouan bakes in summertime highs often above 38°C (100°F). The true desert BWh of the far south, from Douz to the sun-scorched dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental, sees daytime temperatures in summer regularly exceeding 40°C (104°F) while nights can be surprisingly cool. Rain here is a rare event, and humidity plummets to bone-dry levels.

For travellers, seasonal planning is straightforward once you accept the heat gradient. Spring (mid-March to May) and autumn (late September to early November) offer the most balanced conditions, with warm but not oppressive temperatures countrywide and plenty of clear skies for exploring Roman ruins at Carthage or wandering the medinas. Summer (June to August) is the peak of beach tourism along the coast, but the heat can feel unrelenting, especially in the interior and south; light breathable fabrics, generous sun protection, and a cautious approach to midday exposure become essential. Winter (December to February) is mild and often wet in the north, not ideal for a beach holiday but perfectly workable for sightseeing with a light raincoat and a sweater, while the deep south remains dry and pleasant by day but chilly after sunset. Tunisia’s climate delivers a striking variety within a compact area, from the lush, rain-fed orchards of the north to the stark desert vastness of the south. Our interactive maps and data tables on WeatherBox let you explore these patterns in finer detail for your specific dates and destinations, helping you time your visit to match the conditions you will enjoy most.
